The Salt Spring Island Basketry Guild was formed in 1997 by a group of interested basketmakers and collectors. The Guild meets regularly to share basketry skills, educate members about the traditions of basketry, and encourage and inspire each other through:

  • guest speakers on basketry-related topics, such as the history of basketry, basketmakers' travels, and professional basketry artists and their work
  • hands-on learning of traditional and contemporary basketry techniques for all levels of experience
  • special workshops with well-known instructors
  • material gathering and preparation
  • field trips
  • social events
  • opportunities to show/exhibit work
  • information on basketry-related events offered by other groups
More detailed information on Guild activities can be found on this website, including this year's Program and upcoming workshops, how to become a member, a Guild history detailing past events, and links to Guild members and other basketry organizations.

September 2021

We're still here! We are monitoring the BC Health guidelines for Covid-19 and will send emails to members about upcoming on-line or in-person events.

The Fall Fair is taking place this year, September 18 and 19, on Salt Spring http://ssifi.org/fall-fair. The Basketry section is always a visitor favourite and will give everyone a chance to show off what they've been working on during Covid. You don't need to be a Guild member to enter.

The Salt Spring National Art Prize (SSNAP https://saltspringartprize.ca/) is taking place from Sept 24 (Opening Gala) - Oct 25. Ralph Simpson, one of the finalists, is a wood fibre artist from New Brunswick who combines traditional weaving techniques and natural materials to make contemporary basketry and sculptures. The Guild has invited him to teach a workshop on Sept 26 during his visit for the SSNAP opening.

The Parallel Art Show (https://saltspringartprize.ca/pas/) is taking place alongside SSNAP and will feature artists from the Southern Gulf Islands, including two Salt Spring basketmakers - Melanie Thompson and Heather Martin-McNab. It will be at ArtSpring from Sept 25 - Oct 17 with the Opening Gala on Sunday, September 26.

The National Basketry Organization has a great series called NBO Presents which features basketmakers' studio visits and other basketry topics. Guild member, Joan Carrigan, and friends paid tribute to Dorothy Gill Barnes in one of the series. Dorothy passed away in late 2020 and was a good friend and mentor to Joan. https://nationalbasketry.org/nbo-presents/

Membership fees for 2019-2020 will again be rolled over into the new 2021-2022 guild year that runs September 2021 through August 2022.
